Georg Schimmelpfennig worked as a court lutenist teaching Elisabeth von Hessen, the eldest daughter of the Landgrave Moritz of Kassel. She loved Italian madrigals, and wrote a collection of 11 solo madrigals in 1615. The introduction to this piece suggests this collection is a covert declaration of love to Elisabeth. The style is related to Giulio Caccini with many repetitions of tone and tender ornaments and plenty of opportunity for melancholy. Vocal part is c'-g".
