Kirnberger’s collection of progressively ordered keyboard pieces, brought together in a series of four consecutive volumes with Clavierübungen (Keyboard Exercises), is especially interesting because of the complete fingering added by Kirnberger in accordance with the system as developed by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in the Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen (1753; Essay on the true manner of playing the keybaord). In fact, Kirnberger’s volumes are the oldest provided with full fingerings. The first volume contains twelve menuets—the didactic form par excellence of the 18th century—, twelve polonaises and a couple of miscellaneous pieces.
