Although Hoeffler was one of the four great viola da gambists in Germany in the second half of the seventeenth century, his work has largely gone unregarded. In terms of musical content and difficulty, these pieces are comparable to those of Schenck and Kühnel, but clearly show Höffler’s own hallmarks
