Fantasia of Five Parts (“Two parts in one in the 4th above”)

The term “fantasia” came into use in the 16th century, and the composer Luis de Milán (c.1500-c.1561) defined it as arising “solely from the fantasy and skill of the author who created it”. In these two pieces from the Peacock Early Music Series, George Hunter has adapted two of Byrd’s keyboard fantasias to suit the recorder consort.

Master craftsman William Byrd had the skill and imagination to take a simple motive on a most exciting musical journey. The canonic Fantasia of Five Parts (“Two parts in one in the 4th above”) is a work of great elegance and variety. Overall, the 5- and 6-part music is especially remarkable for the extended length and inventiveness of some pieces.

These pieces will offer great satisfaction to able recorder players.
