Best known nowadays for his flute music, Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737) was a respected teacher who wrote four treatises about music. In this edition, the editor Andrew Robinson takes a selection of menuets and contre-dances from his surviving books.
The term contre-dance or contradance is believed to be a corruption of the English country dance. They became more popular throughout the 18th century, perhaps as a reaction to the refined dancing styles of the court, perhaps just because they were fun!
The menuets don’t specify any instrumentation but the contre-dances are for violins, flutes or oboes, so - until this edition - recorder players would have had to transpose them as necessary.
