Three years after completing an astonishing series of fantasias for viols, Purcell composed a set of 12 "sonnata's" for two violins and bass viol. Later he added a continuo bass part with figured bass figures. Dalton Cantey conceived the idea of performing the violin parts an octave lower on tenor (or, with more difficulty but greater sonority, bass) viols. Volume 1 contains the first six, edited by George Houle, including the figures in the continuo part in the score. Score & parts.
